WHAT IS
FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE?
Functional Medicine is a personalized, systems-based approach to healthcare that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease. It treats the whole person, not just symptoms, and aims to restore balance and optimize health through nutrition, lifestyle changes, and targeted therapies.
WHY IS GUT TESTING A
PRIORITY IN FUNCTION MEDICINE?
Assessing the gut first is crucial because it plays a key role in digestion, nutrient absorption, immune function, and the gut-brain connection. Imbalances in gut health can lead to inflammation, chronic conditions, and nutrient deficiencies, making it essential for overall well-being and addressing root causes of health issues.
1. CHRONIC FATIGUE
Persistent tiredness that doesn't improve with rest, often linked to hormonal imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, or chronic inflammation.
2. DIGESTIVE ISSUES
Conditions like bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), often related to gut imbalances or food sensitivities.
3. CHRONIC PAIN
Unexplained or ongoing pain, including headaches, joint pain, or muscle aches, which may be connected to inflammation, stress, or nutritional deficiencies.
4. HORMONAL IMBALANCES
Symptoms such as irregular periods, severe PMS, weight gain, or mood swings that are often linked to issues with thyroid, adrenal, or reproductive hormones.
5. AUTOIMMUNE DISORDERS
Symptoms like joint pain, fatigue, or skin issues associated with autoimmune conditions, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body.
6. SKIN PROBLEMS
Issues like acne, eczema, or psoriasis, often tied to internal imbalances such as poor digestion, inflammation, or toxin buildup.
7. MENTAL HEALTH CONCERNS
Anxiety, depression, brain fog, or mood swings, which can be linked to imbalances in neurotransmitters, gut health, or nutrient levels.
8. WEIGHT MANAGEMENT
Difficulty losing weight or unexplained weight gain, potentially related to metabolic issues, hormonal imbalances, or inflammation.
9. ALLERGIES AND FOOD SENSITIVITIES
Chronic allergic reactions or sensitivities, often related to immune system imbalances or gut health.
10. SLEEP DISORDERS
Insomnia or poor sleep quality, which may be influenced by stress, hormonal imbalances, or poor nutrition.

CEO
MEET
Hello, my name is Dr. Melissa Madalone. I am a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), a Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health NP (PMHNP-BC), a Board Certified Adult Health NP (ANP-BC) and a Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner.
I am the Owner/Operator of Avalon Functional Wellness. I completed my Doctorate of Nursing Practice in 2015 and have been a practicing Nurse Practitioner since 2009. I previously practiced in hospitals, nursing homes, and primary care settings as well as privately via telehealth for many years.
I am licensed in New York and currently see patients virtually/online only. Being licensed and Board Certified in Psychiatric Mental Health, Adult Health and Functional Medicine, I have the training, experience, and unique expertise to evaluate and assess many aspects of your care.
Avalon Functional Wellness promotes “Gut health first” plan of care… Gut health is a cornerstone of overall well-being, and Avalon Functional Wellness places a strong emphasis on its importance. The gut is not only responsible for digestion and nutrient absorption but also plays a vital role in immune function, hormone regulation, and even mental health. Imbalances in the gut, such as dysbiosis or leaky gut syndrome, can contribute to a wide range of chronic health issues, including autoimmune diseases, inflammation, and mood disorders. By first addressing gut health through testing we can then together, formulate personalized dietary recommendations, suggest lifestyle changes, and targeted therapies to restore gut health.
